sacs are bounded by the hypertrophied circular and longitudinal fibres and their contents remain almost shut off. These pouches are the result of constipation, muscular fibres become hypertrophied, but their effort to propel onward their contents lead to these minute hernial protrusions." W. H. Cripps described vesicocolic fistula due to inflammatory changes in the colon in 1888,3 and in 1903 R. Morison carried out a resection of the sigmoid colon for what he thought to be a carcinomatous obstruction but which proved to be what he preferred to call "sacculitis."4 By 1910, however, A. Keith could collect only seven specimens of diverticula of the colon in the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the London medical schools compared with 149 other examples of alimentary diverticula.5 Aetiologically he regarded the colonic diverticula as being due to high pressure within the bowel lumen. Seven years later W. H. M. Telling and 0. C. Gruner were able to collect 324 cases of colonic diverticula and gave a detailed analysis of the complications of this condition.6

Diverticular disease of the colon is a common cause of morbidity among many western races, and, being especially a disease of the elderly, is becoming a problem of increasing magnitude. Abdominal symptoms are common in this age group, and in the absence of evidence of other disease, the finding of diverticula on x-ray examination is prone to lead to a diagnosis of 'diverticulitis'. The frequenc...

متن کاملIs the Intestinal Gas Associated With the Development of Right Colonic Diverticula?
TO THE EDITOR: I read with great interest the paper entitled “Relationship between intestinal gas and the development of right colonic diverticula” by Jang et al, which was published in the October 2010 issue of Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility. Hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) are gases produced in the colon by the breakdown of carbohydrates, due to the action of anaerobic methanog...
